You may have seen it trending on TikTok, recommended by your mates or heard it as an urban myth. Wherever you did, it’s true. Every year thousands of backpackers travel the world by trading their skills for free stays in hostels

It’s not clickbait. It’s not house sitting or pet sitting. It’s not remote work or teaching English. Or being an “independent travel agent”. Because we know how those go!!

It’s an exchange. That’s it. 🤝

In my opinion, it’s the most realistic way you can go from sitting at home, having very little to no savings (dreaming of travelling) to actually being there and doing it without any specific skills or experience. All it takes is a bit of know-how. 💡

And I’ll teach you.

I’m Alex. I’ve travelled the world for 10 years and still going. I started this to make travel accessible and affordable for young people. One day, I hope to have a company that sends backpackers to the moon… but that’s another story. 🚀

Anyway, let’s get to it. 🤙

What is a Hostel Exchange?

A hostel exchange is sometimes called a "work exchange" or "hostel volunteering". It’s basically a (no money agreement) where you provide a few hours of help per week, and in return, the hostel provides you with a free place to stay. Therefore allowing you to travel for free (less) and all the rest of it. 🏠✅

It’s not a job. And it does not take jobs from local people. Hell no, I'm not about that. Hostels run perfectly fine without volunteers. You’re just contributing to the hostel’s community. The focus is on cultural exchange with fun mutual benefits. 🙌

Why Should You Do a Hostel Exchange?

Five reasons why backpackers choose to do exchanges:

  • It saves money. 💰 No rent, no bills, less living expenses, cheaper cost of living. More money to spend on great food and bucket list experiences.

  • Slower travel. 🐢 Instead of rushing through cities, you stay for months. It gives you the chance to find the best local food spots, make deep friendships and live in the culture (it's better for the environment too).

  • Builds your skills. Depending on the exchange, you might learn to work the reception, run social media or even plan events. 🛠️

  • Builds your CV 📂 and portfolio with real clients, real projects and real references.

  • Instant family. 🫂 Solo travel can be lonely. When you do an exchange, you’re immediately part of a team. You’ll work, eat, and explore with other backpackers and local friends.

Who are Hostel Exchanges For?

Anyone and everyone. You don’t need specific skills, experience or a stacked CV. It’s the best thing about it. The main thing you need is passion 🔥. You need to be someone who wants to help out, get stuck in, and just be a decent team player. 🤝

Are there certain skills and experience that’ll help you land an exchange? Yes, definitely. But it’s not a necessity. If you’ve got some experience to spare, by all means, use it!

Here are some things hostels love to see:

  • Hospitality & Service: ☕️ Worked in a cafe, a hostel/hotel, a bar, or any kind of hospitality role.

  • Creative Stuff: 🎨 Being a graphic designer, a content creator, or an influencer.

  • Social: 📣 Experience as a party promoter, a tour guide, or a yoga instructor.

  • Travel Knowledge: 🗺️ If you’ve backpacked before, stayed in hostels, or worked for a tour company.

  • Life Skills: 🧹 Working with young people, doing admin, or even just being good at cleaning and keeping a place tidy.

Realistically, any experience can help. Whether it’s in a high-end hostel or a summer pulling pints in the pub, you’ve probably got something useful to bring to the table. If not? Don't worry. Most of this stuff is easy to learn on the go. 🏃‍♂️

How Does a Hostel Exchange Work?

Every hostel is different, but most follow a standard structure like this:

1. Time Commitment ⏰ Hostels ask for a set period of work time, typically: 15 to 40 hours of help per week. This is usually split into shifts, leaving you with plenty of "days-off" to explore.

2. Common Tasks 📋 You don't need professional experience for most roles. Common tasks include:

  • Reception: 🛎️ Checking guests in, answering questions, and handling bookings.

  • Social/Events: 🍻 Leading pub crawls, organising walking tours, or hosting hostel dinners.

  • Housekeeping: 🧼 Helping the team keep the common areas and rooms tidy.

  • Content Creation: 🤳 Taking photos or managing the hostel’s Instagram.

3. What’s Included? 🛌 At a minimum, you get a free bed (usually in a dorm). Many hostels also include:

  • Free breakfast or shared staff meals. 🥐

  • Free use of the kitchen and laundry facilities. 🧺

  • Discounts on tours, drinks, and activities. 🍹
